Back in 2003, we used prefolds and plastic covers from Walmart during our foray into cloth diapers. We also used diaper pins. I was always afraid that I was going to poke C while fastening the prefold. I actually did several times. Several years later, a friend was changing her little boy's cloth diaper and she wasn't using diaper pins... She couldn't remember what it was called at the time, but I wished that I could find them and try them out.
Since then, we found those neat do-hickies that I admired. Although they aren't called 'do-hickies', but Snappis. Most Snappi retailers only have size 1 for a baby. But Snappi Baby also has a size 2 for toddlers. For those who want to use prefolds (which is less expensive) for their special needs child, the size 2 Snappi would be very good if you have the same dislike of diaper pins that I have.
Snappis are fairly easy to use. Cross the diaper tabs and attach the snappi on one side and then repeat on the other side. Pull the Snappi down and attach it to the front of the diaper. I've found that I really like the Snappi and while we just have the size 1 right now, with the proper tabs, it works very well. Most of the time, I do let J run around without a cover over the Snappi and he leaves it alone. However, it is recommended to have your child wear a cover when you're using a Snappi. Depending on how long J is in diapers, I would definitely consider getting some size 2 Snappis to use when he grows out of the size 1.
